The machines may have stopped for the day, but the ideas certainly haven’t.

Teach the World to Sew Day™ 2026 brought makers together on 19 September for a worldwide day dedicated to sewing, creativity, inspiration and learning. For beginners, it was an opportunity to discover what can happen when fabric, thread and a little guidance come together. For experienced sewists, it was another reason to make time for a craft they love.

At HUSQVARNA® VIKING® Australia, we see the end of the event as something more than a finish line. It’s an invitation to take the techniques, confidence and inspiration from the day and see where they lead next.

This Year’s Project: A Quilted Sunglasses Case

At the centre of Teach the World to Sew Day™ 2026 was a practical project designed to introduce makers to essential sewing techniques: a beginner-friendly quilted sunglasses case.

Compact enough to feel approachable yet detailed enough to introduce useful skills, the project was designed to take makers through several stages of sewing while creating something practical they can use afterwards.

The project explores foundational techniques including topstitching, sewing curves and assembling a lined piece.

It’s a clever reminder that learning to sew doesn’t have to begin with something complicated. A relatively small project can introduce several techniques at once — and give you the satisfaction of seeing those individual steps come together as a finished piece.

Your Project Guide, Explained

If you missed Teach the World to Sew Day™ 2026, the event may be finished, but the project remains available to explore.

The official Project Instructions provide a useful roadmap for recreating the sunglasses case at home. Rather than simply showing you the finished result, the project takes you through the preparation and sewing process, helping you understand how the different elements come together.

Here’s what you can expect as you work through the project:

Start with your materials

The project uses cotton fabric for the outer and lining pieces, lightweight cotton batting and all-purpose sewing thread. Having the materials organised before you begin means you can focus on the sewing itself once you sit down at your machine.

Prepare your sewing space

Alongside your sewing machine, the project calls for everyday sewing essentials such as a universal sewing needle, fabric scissors or a rotary cutter, clips or pins, and an iron and ironing surface. Optional tools can also help with measuring, turning and keeping quilting lines evenly spaced.

Discover quilting

The batting adds structure to the sunglasses case while giving you an opportunity to explore quilting. It’s an accessible way to see how stitching can be both functional and decorative.

Practise topstitching

Topstitching adds another level of detail to the project and introduces a technique that can be carried across to many future sewing projects.

Work with curves

Curved sewing introduces a different experience from stitching straight seams. Working through the shape of the case gives newer makers an opportunity to practise controlling fabric around a curve.

Bring the lining and outer layers together

The project also introduces the process of creating a lined item, showing how separate layers can be constructed and assembled into one neat, practical finished piece.

By the time your sunglasses case takes shape, you haven’t simply followed a set of instructions — you’ve explored several sewing techniques that can become building blocks for future projects.

Give the Original Project Your Signature

There’s another reason to revisit the project after the event: you can make it your own.

Once you’re comfortable with the construction, your fabric choices can completely change the personality of the finished case.

Go bold with a statement print. Pair contrasting fabrics for the outer and lining. Explore colour combinations that reflect your personal style. Or make another version and focus on refining the details and techniques you learned the first time.

The instructions provide the foundation. What you do with that foundation is where your own creativity comes in.

From One Sewing Day to Your Next Creative Idea

Teach the World to Sew Day™ 2026 has now come to an end, but perhaps that’s not the most interesting part of the story.

What matters next is where the experience takes you.

Maybe you discovered a technique you’d like to practise again. Maybe completing the sunglasses case has given you the confidence to tackle something more ambitious. Or perhaps seeing makers come together around the same project has simply reminded you to make more room for creativity.

Whatever your starting point, there’s always another possibility waiting at your sewing machine.

With HUSQVARNA® VIKING® Australia, the final stitch of Teach the World to Sew Day™ doesn’t have to feel like an ending.

It can be the first stitch of whatever you create next.
