Twist Yard Game

Summer wouldn’t be the same without outdoor yard games, right?

We think so. That's why we've created our own Twist game and customized it with different coloured circles for a party or team colours for tailgating.

Now you can play this classic game anywhere—and make it your own!

Shopping List:

  • Husqvarna Viking sewing machine (we used the EPIC 95Q)
  • Extension Table
  • Circular attachment (Category 8 & 9 = Part H9203440-96, Category 1-7 = Part H9203920-9)

  • Decorative stitch foot B
  • Background fabric (WHITE) 5.2m
  • Circle fabric (RED, YELLOW, GREEN and BLUE) 0.7m of each colour
  • Backing fabric (extra wide backing 275cm) 2.3m
  • Warm and natural backing - Full size 230cm x 244cm

  • Quilting needle size 90/14
  • 6" Applique scissors
  • Steam iron
  • Ironing board
  • Cutting mat
  • Straight edge ruler

  • Straight pins & safety pins

Cutting:

  • Cut 6 x 28cmx28cm squares of each colour (RED, GREEN, YELLOW and BLUE)
  • Cut 24 x 39.5cmx39.5cm squares in white fabric
  • Cut 24 x 31cmx28cm squares of Tear n Wash

Machine Set-Up

  1. Insert a HUSQVARNA® VIKING® embroidery size 80/12 needle into your machine.
  2. Attach the Utility Foot A
  3. Thread with coordinating rayon 40wt embroidery & bobbin thread.
  4. Select a straight stitch with a length of 2.5mm.

Attach the Circular Attachment and move the slider all the way to the left at

26cm.

Fabric Preparation:

  • Fold each 28cmx28cm colour square and each 39.5cmx39.5cm white square in half.
  • Fold each 28cmx28cm square and each 39.5cmx39.5cm square in half again to create a smaller square.
  • Press the folded corner to mark the center of each square

Construction:

  • Roughly center a piece of the Tear N’ Wash below a white 39.5cmx39.5cm square.
  • Roughly Center a coloured 28cmx28cm square on top of the white square
  • Take the push pin that came with the Circular Attachment and place it in the center of the colored square, the area pressed with an iron.

Next push the pin through the center of the marked white square and Tear N’ Wash.

  • Place the pin onto the Circular Attachment.
  • Sew a straight stitch all the way around to create a circle. Be sure to smooth out the coloured fabric as you sew to reduce the risk of bubbled fabric.
  • Using applique scissors cut around the outer edge of the stitch, cutting away the excess fabric.
  • Under the ‘Applique Stitches” menu on your machine select the largest satin stitch.
  • Remove the Utility Foot A.
  • Attach the Decorative Stitch Foot B.
  • Sew the satin stitch all the way around the circle to give a finished edge.
  • Remove the push pin and press the block.
  • Square up the block to 37cmx37cm
  • Repeat this process with all of the coloured & white squares. There should be 6 finished blocks for each color with a total of 24 blocks.
  • Remove the Circular Attachment and Decorative Stitch Foot B.
  • Attach the Adjustable ¼” Foot with Guide.
  • Select a straight stitch with a length of 2.5mm.

Organize blocks by colour. Place 2 blocks of the same color right sides together and pin if needed. Sew with the raw edge of the seam against the guide of the adjustable 1/4" foot. Remember to remove the pins before sewing over them. Continue until all six blocks of one colour are sewn together into a row.

  • Repeat this process with the other 3 groups of coloured circle blocks.
  • There should be 4 strips of 6 same coloured squares.
  • Press seams of each strip in the same direction.
  • Take one coloured row and place it right side together with another row of coloured squares. Be sure that the pressed seams for the two strips are going in opposite directions.
  • Sew the two rows together with a ¼” seam allowance.
  • Repeat this process with the other two rows of colored squares until they are all sewn together. Be mindful of how the seams are pressed so that when the rows are lined up the seams go in opposite directions.
  • You should have one large quilt top with 4 squares across and 6 squares down. It should measure 143cmx214cm.
  • Make a quilt sandwich with the finished quilt top, warm and natural batting and backing fabric. The quilt top and backing should be right sides out.
  • Secure the quilt sandwich together with safety pins all over.
  • Remove the Adjustable ¼” Foot with Guide
  • Attach the Stitch in the Ditch Foot.
  • Stitch in the ditch between all of the quilt blocks. Remove the safety pin as you go.
  • Trim raw edges of the quilt sandwich to square up the quilt.
  • Attach binding in your desired way.

Conclusion:

Now you have created this twist yard game quilt, it is the perfect excuse to hold a family gathering and keep the children and entertained for hours.
